New Leaf Studio were appointed by the Dean and Chapter to come up with designs to re-configure the surrounds to the Cathedral as part of an ambitious 10-year programme of capital and outreach work known as Project Pilgrim.
The design for Cathedral Green involved removal of the previously dominant car parking to provide a multifunctional public space and fitting setting for the cathedral as well as improving access to the great west door. The project involved working closely with the Cathedral Architect, Archaeologist, local authority officers and both lay staff and clergy at the Cathedral.
The geometry of the new public space uses the cathedral building as a root, with steps following a segment of an ellipse centered on a new location for the font inside the Cathedral, this leads through a series of concentric circles centered on the main entrance, into a spiral leading to a plinth at its focus.
