HAYDON BATCH
RADSTOCK
Most of the site comprises a dis-used colliery spoil heap (the word "batch" being the local name for spoil heaps). Since it was last worked the site had developed diverse habitats, the most significant being its extensive species rich grassland that hosts a number of threatened (UK BAP priority) species. However the grassland was gradually being taken over by scrub.
Radstock Town Council commissioned New Leaf Studio to produce a masterplan to improve the site as a public green space, with emphasis improving access and conserving and enhancing its biodiversity.
Our involvement continues, working with the Somer Valley Rediscovered Partnership, providing design and specifications for phased improvements as funds become available.
We are also preparing a management plan for the site, which will act as a tool to guide its ongoing management to optimise the balance between maintaining and improving biodiversity whilst facilitating public access and recreational use.
