This narrow spit of land on the tidal stretches of a river had for many years been used as allotments. However, its prior use as a refuse tip meant that the ground was contaminated and the allotments were later closed. The site lay abandoned and closed off but was regularly illegally accessed by bottle diggers. The council client commissioned New Leaf Studio to prepare a masterplan for the site, for it to form an extension to the adjacent park, in conjunction with a program of remediation to make safe the contamination and stabilize the banks.

The work involved designing a new layout for the site and defining management regimes to optimise the balance between improving biodiversity and providing for public access and recreation
