RADSTOCK MEMORIAL GARDEN
We were commissioned by Norton Radstock Town Council to design a public greenspace that would reflect Radstock’s past coal mining and railway heritage together with providing a new location for its war memorial as well as forming a vibrant and multifunctional focus to the town.
The former railway station site in the centre of this small market town had lain as an underused and uninspiring area of grass since the closure of the railways in the 1960’s.
Within a structural framework of paths, stone walls and formal tree planting, a combination of shrubs and widescale informal herbaceous planting provides year round colour and textural interest whilst keeping ongoing maintenance to a minimum.
The Miners memorial, an artwork structure by Sebastien Boyesen, forms an integral part of the scheme as a landmark feature incorporating an old coal pit winding-wheel (or sheaf).
New Leaf Studio worked as lead consultant on this project from inception through to completion, including undertaking a series of community consultation events, submitting a detailed planning application, preparing detailed technical drawings, obtaining tenders and managing the construction phase.
