| We worked in close association with the project architects
from the early design stages of this
project, designing both the hard and soft landscape. The client’s
brief was to employ best practice to
design a site that would contribute to the future heritage of the
800-year-old charity. This called for
imaginative and creative use of space and close attention to selection
of materials and detailing to ensure a
close harmony between buildings and landscape.
Phase I, the 55 unit almshouse was completed in the summer of 2003. Input
included;
initial feasibility studies, detailed planning application, detailed
contract drawings and documentation
together with contract administration as part of a team of consultants
for the construction of the almshouse
as the first phase. We also prepared a landscape management plan and
advised and assisted the client with
employing a full time gardener for this and their pre-existing sites. The
design includes
a series of garden, courtyard and roof garden spaces for use by the
residents, each with a different character
and function. Within each space we detailed both the paving and
planting together with other bespoke elements
to be made and installed by specialist artists and craftsmen. These
included; curved
benches, timber roof planters, traditional boundary railings with
unique finials, gates with stone piers,
water features and original artwork in the form
of bronze
plaques set within the paving. Total
Contract value
for landscape elements of Phase I - £700,000. The site was awarded the Almshouse Association “Patron’s Award” 2004 Presented by the Patron, HRH Prince Charles at Combe Park on 17 November 2004. |
